In the Rugrats Adventure Game for the PC the player helps the Rugrats rescue “Reptar” and save the Earth from aliens. This project translated the TV-series world into an interactive environment that put the player eye to eye with the Rugrats. By combining 2D character animation with 3D sets the game maintained the TV show’s look and style while providing navigable spaces for the player.

For the game portion, I created all of the animated bits of Phil and Lil where the player navigates the different rooms and searches for items or for Chuckie. These animations included simple walk cycles, gags and amusing comments, searches in different parts of the rooms and retrieval of items to be handed over to Tommy for storage in his diaper (yes, his diaper). I also animated a few of the cinematic sequences.

Details:

Rough and cleaned up animation were hand drawn and scanned into the computer. Rough animation tests and final authoring were both done in Macromedia Director.
